  2. Ray-Pec 4-2 Defense • Philosophy-We are an attacking, 4 – 2 defense and will play man-to-man most of the time. We are multiple front, minimum technique. We are very simple and very sound. • 2. Two-platoon football at all levels, 8th, 9th, JV and Varsityl-39 kids the first year. • Positives • Negatives

  3. Defensive Philosophy, cont. • Control what you can control!---Stance, keys, get off, reads. • Run stoppers---stop the run, force the pass, QB success with a 4 man rush versus 5 or 6 man • Weekly defensive goals

  4. Defensive Personnel • -Our linemen must be very disciplined and play their gap. The defensive line plays with hands on technique, protecting their gap. The defensive line will attack their technique on the snap of the ball keeping their hands on the offensive line. Our nose and our tackle are asked to demand a double team. Our end and our whip must be great edge players and contain the run. Our first step is somewhat unique and takes some training.

  5. Defensive Personnel • -Linebackers must play downhill, attacking their gap when it is threatened. The linebackers must be able to read through a simple progression of reads. The sam, mike and stud coached by the linebacker coach. Sam = strong LB, Mike = weak LB and stud = strong outside LB. Downhill, wide open.

  6. Defensive Personnel • -Defensive backs must be able to play man coverage and be able to give help on the run. We will play a man coverage (cov. 1 or cov. 5) most of the time. Corners, Free and Panther are coached by the secondary coach. Safety must know where he goes in the blitz package. Safety must make it right.

  7. Alignment rules • The nose will line-up in the technique of the first number to the tightend or call side. The tackle away from the tightend or call side will line up in the technique of the second number called. The inside linebackers will split the leg of the guard on the gap they are responsible for. The stud ($) will line-up in a six technique on the tightend. If there is a “wide” call, the end will line-up in a 7 technique. The whip end will be in a 5 technique on the open end.

If in doubt, the 2 tech will control the A gap, LB will control B gap. • 3 B Control the area between the head of the guard to the head of the tackle. • 4I B Control the area between the head of the guard to the head of the tackle. • 4 B/C Control the area between the head of the guard to the head of the tightend. • 5 C Control the area between the head of the tackle to the head of the tightend or sideline. • 6 C/D Control the area from the head of the tackle to the sideline • 7 D Control the area from the head of the tightend to the head of the tackle. • 9 D Control the area from the head of the tightend to the sideline.
