  3. Introduction Schedule Juno was launched 5 Aug 2011. Deep space maneuvers on 30 Aug & 3 Sept 2012 Earth gravity assist on 9 Oct 2013 (500 km altitude) Arrival at Jupiter on 5 Jul 2016 107 day capture orbit prior to commencing operations Mission includes 32 high inclination, high eccentricity orbits periapsis altitude 4500 km semi-major axis 19.91 RJ period 10.9725 days Management Council Meeting, UCLA 28-29 November 2012

Introduction • 5 of first 7 orbits are dedicated to microwave spectroscopy with spacecraft spin axis perpendicular to the orbit plane • The remaining orbits are dedicated to gravity determination with the spin axis aligned with the Earth direction • Primary science is acquired for approx. 6 hrs. centered on periapsis • Fields and particles data are acquired at low rates for the apoapsis portion of the orbit. • Solar power constrains data rates – data is played back during the apoapsis portions of the orbits Management Council Meeting, UCLA 28-29 November 2012

Introduction • Juno’s instruments include • X and Ka bands for gravity science -to determine planet’s interior structure • MAG, a vector fluxgate magnetometer to study the magnetic dynamo, the planet’s interior and polar magnetosphere • A suite of fields & particles instruments – JEDI, JADE & Waves • MWR, a microwave radiometer (6 wavelengths between 1.3 & 50 cm) to perform deep sounding and composition measurements • JIRAM an infrared mapping spectrometer from ASI will map auroral structure and complement MWR • UVS an ultraviolet spectrometer • JunoCam, an education and outreach camera Management Council Meeting, UCLA 28-29 November 2012

  6. SIS Development • SISs are either signed off or are far along in the process: Gravity, WAVES, JEDI, MWR, UVS, JIRAM. • MAG has submitted a SIS to PPI. There are some concerns with a navigational component that may fall under NAIF’s umbrella as opposed to the MAG team. • The funding and contract for MSSS to deliver JunoCam images to the PDS was slow in coming and when it was finally in place MSSS was completely distracted with the MSL landing and subsequent activity.  They are just getting started on the SIS • JADE’s problems hindering development have been solved.   7. Mission Development • Most teams have tested deliveries to the Juno SOC. Rob Wilson /LASP has assumed responsibility for JADE and will generate the SIS after supplying products needed for January testing. • JSOC has been able to replicate directory structures from instrument SISs at their site. • JSOC discussing with ATM and PPI about the mechanics of delivery to nodes.
