  1. NHS Bursaries forEngland Information for pre-registration courses starting September 2013

  2. NHS bursaries in the UK This bursary guidance (issued June 2012) applies to students studying pre-registration courses in England starting in Sept 2012 and April 2013. Alternative arrangements apply in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Tuition fees paid by the NHS (except for Social Work).

  3. NHS Student Bursaries award grants and bursaries for eligible students on all Canterbury Christ Church University pre-registration courses in health care. Alternative arrangements apply to Social Work students.

  4. Eligible Healthcare Professions at CCCU Paramedics (under review)

  5. Eligibility You may still be eligible for an NHS Bursary even if you have: • already had public funding for higher education; • previously received an NHS Bursary and wish to switch professions.

  6. Eligibility criteria Additional information • If you have been living outside the UK because you or your family were temporarily employed abroad, you may be treated as if your residence in the UK had not been interrupted. • If you are living here mainly to receive full-time education and you would normally have lived elsewhere, you will not usually be treated as having been ordinarily resident in the UK.

  7. How to apply • You must have a conditional or unconditional place on an NHS funded course at a University or Higher Education Institution in England.  • After applying, the University will pass your details to NHS Student Bursaries • You will receive unique student reference number and letter from NHS Student Bursaries directing you to application forms: www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk

  8. September 2012 entitlementsNHS Students(excluding Social Work students) • All eligible students receive £1,000 grant per year. • Additional means-tested bursary of up to £4,395 (£5,460 for London students) for eligible students • Maintenance loan from Student Finance England of up to £2,324 (£3,263for London students) for eligible students. • Additional disability allowances are available for eligible students.

  9. For courses between 31 and 44 weeks additional weekly maintenance payments are allowed if:

Additional allowances linked to the Bursary for NHS students Subject to personal circumstances: • Allowance for the excess cost of daily travel to the practice placement site compared to normal travel to campus. • Allowance for temporary accommodation near the practice placement site. A reimbursement of £55 per night for hotel/B&B or £25 per night for non commercial accommodation is accepted. • Other travel and placement allowances also apply.

  12. The University and the Higher Education England Kent Surrey and Sussex (HEEKSS), along with other HEIs in England, have requested that the student funding for Paramedic degree programmes be recognised in line with other health professions to receive bursaries and loans. This application is currently being considered by the Department of Health.

  13. The current arrangements that have been implemented in the interim period are as follows: • Tuition fee: Paid by the NHS • Bursary: Approximately £3000 per year is paid monthly in instalments of £250, irrespective of income once enrolled on the programme, provided DBS and health checks have been performed. • Dependants’ allowances: • These are subject to agreement with the HEEKSS

  14. Maintenance Loan • Students living in parental home – a reduced non-means tested loan of £1744 for years 1 and 2, and £1324 in year 3 • Students not living in parental home – a reduced non-means tested loan of £2324 for years 1 and 2, and £1811 in year 3 • Placement expenses will also be paid retrospectively but within defined limits. • On application to the Student Loan Company in respect of loans, please request advice from the University on completing the appropriate forms.

  15. Social Work

  16. Undergraduate Social Work Students The government has confirmed (Oct 26th 2012) that the bursary for first year students has been withdrawn. Students will now fund their first year in full through the existing student loan mechanism In year 2 and 3 a reduced number of bursaries will be available based on each institution’s allocation CCCU has been allocated 27 bursaries per year To be eligible for a bursary students need to meet the eligibility criteria set out by NHSBSA PLUS Be ranked in the top 27 by CCCU

  17. Undergraduate bursary • The undergraduate bursary will be retained for students in Years Two and Three and comprise: • The basic bursary including an indicative amount for practice placement travel expenses, and • Different rates for London and elsewhere. • If you do not receive an allocated bursary you may still be eligible for Placement Travel Allowance, this is currently £862.50

  18. Eligibility – under-graduate • Meet the outcomes set out at entry level of the PCF and • have experience of the sector e.g. work related, or user/carer experience; and • have other work/life experience related to the sector or likely to be of value to the sector; and • have already passed the ‘readiness to practice’ threshold (end of Year 1 studies) which is part of the PCF. • In addition during year one • We will assess using • Academic grades • Attendance • Individual admissions interview score

  19. Yr 1 Social Work students Student Finance England currently offer three main sources of funding: • Maintenance grant (depending on family income. Income less than £25,000 grant = £3354, income more than 42,611 grant = £0 ) to cover accommodation and general living expenses • Maintenance loan (from £4375 up to £7675 depending on amount of grant) to cover accommodation and general living expenses. • Tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of the university fee, CCCU = £9,000

Yr 2 & 3 Social Work students Student Finance England currently offer two main sources of funding: • Maintenance loan (currently £4,950) to cover accommodation and general living expenses. • Tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of the university fee, CCCU = £9,000 Additionally • All eligible applicants will receive a non-income assessed basic grant via the NHS Bursary Scheme of up to £4,575 per year. 

  21. Yr 2 & 3 Social Work students • All eligible applicants will receive a non-income assessed basic grant of up to £4,575 per year.The amount of the grant is dependant on where you study and whether you are studying full-time or part-time. • This grant includes a fixed Placement Learning contribution of £575 for full-time undergraduate students. • The purpose of this contribution is towards your placement travel expenses from term time address to placement agency. It is expected that the agency offering your placement will contribute towards the travel costs incurred while carrying out your placement duties.  A contribution of this nature will not affect your entitlement to the basic grant.

  22. Post-Graduate Social Work Students • The postgraduate bursary will be retained as is and will comprise: • The basic bursary including an indicative amount for practice placement travel expenses, • Contribution to tuition fees, • Disabled student allowance, • Income assessed maintenance grant, • Income assessed adults dependent allowance, • Income assessed parents learning allowance, • Income assessed Childcare allowance, and • Different rates for London and outside London. • However, the number available is also capped and for CCCU this is 29 per year • Those who do not receive a bursary may be eligible for placement travel expenses of £862.50

  23. Eligibility – Post-graduate • If too many students remain after criteria are applied then a range of other relevant factors should be taken into account (e.g. grades/academic points, admissions criteria considered) in accordance with HEI processes.) • Applicants are assessed and ranked prior to starting the programme Meet the outcomes set out at entry level of the PCF and: • have experience of the sector e.g. work related, or user/carer experience; and • have other work/life experience related to the sector or likely to be of value to the sector

  24. NHS and Social Work students • A wide range of other allowances are available for eligible students, • childcare grant, • disabled persons allowance.

  25. Disabled Students Allowance (a)The cost of employing a non-medical personal helper, up to £20,520 per year; (b) Major items of specialist equipment £5,162 across the course; (c) Additional expenditure for travel in the UK, reasonably incurred by reason of the student’s disability, to attend or participate in the course or a practice placement arranged as part of the course;

  26. Other Allowances • Students who qualify for a full bursary may also qualify for additional allowances. (a) A dependants allowance (b) An allowance for single students with dependants (c) A parents learning allowance • A childcare allowance (child under 15) • A maternity or adoption award (Bursary maintenance element for up to one year) • Detail and amounts for these allowances is insanely complicated and occupies 10 pages of the current guidelines and as such will not be further detailed!

  27. How is it paid? • Calculated on an academic year basis covering 12 months. • For each year of study, payments commencing in the first month of study will normally be made in 12 equal monthly instalments. • The first bursary instalment for eligible students is usually an advance payment to cover the first two months of the course.
