  1. SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES Researching scholarships and bursaries can take time and effort but it can really pay off!!!

  2. Definitions • Scholarship: A scholarship is a form of financial aid provided to a student on the basis of academic merit • Bursary: A bursary is another form of financial assistance available to post-secondary students. A bursary is based primarily on an individual’s financial needs.  Most bursary and scholarship programs have a formal application process, which may include other selection criteria such as extracurricular activities, community involvement, and leadership.

  3. Research websites • www.scholarshipscanada.com • www.studentawards.com • These two websites will require students to log in and create a profile • There is no charge for these websites • Using the student’s profile scholarships and bursaries will be selected • Students will have to read through descriptions and criteria and eliminate awards that do not apply to them • Students will then apply online or using paper application for the award • Awards may require an application, an essay, a questionnaire, etc….

  4. College and University Websites Students should also visit college and university websites to see what they have to offer Go to the institution’s website and search under; financial aid, awards, bursaries For university information go to www.electronicinfo.ca, click on Searchable Scholarships and do a search For college information go to www.ontariocolleges.ca, click on Plan, click on Money Matters, click on desired link. For college information also go to the college website and research awards www.algonquincollege.com

  5. SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY AWARDS The community of Almonte is also very generous in awarding scholarships and bursaries. To see some of the awards donated by the community and school go to the scholarships and bursaries section of Ms Morrison’s webpage. Students do not apply for most of these awards but are selected by the Commencement Committee.http://teacherweb.com/ON/AlmonteDistrictHighSchool/MsAMorrison

  6. OSAPOntario Student Assistance Program • Government Loans and Grants are also available through OSAP • For more information on who is eligible for OSAP and how to apply for OSAP go to https://osap.gov.on.ca/OSAPPortal • Students can start applying for OSAP in May once the new 2011 application is available online • It take about ten weeks to process an OSAP application so students should apply early • Eligibility is usually based on parental income

  7. Other Resources • Access scholarship file in Student Services • Ask about awards available through the workplace • Ask about awards available through social organizations • Check out the scholarship board outside of Student Services • Check out list on Ms Morrison’s website for upcoming awards

  8. Tips • Keep an updated copy of your resume as it can help you complete an application quickly • Find references ahead of time • Keep copies of all your applications, once you have done one the rest will be easy!!! • Start researching awards at the end of grade 11/start of grade 12 as some deadlines are early • Get involved in the community and school • Maintain a good average in school • Have someone proofread your application • Put some time and effort into applying for awards, many awards are unclaimed because no one applies for them!!!
