  1. The Slovak System of Education • Pre-school (Nursery schools and Kindergardens) age 3-6 • Primary (Elementary Schools) age 6-15 • Secondary age 15-19 - Grammar schools called Gymnasia - Special schools (technical, business,chemistry,etc.) - Vocational schools Terciary age 19-23 - undergraduate - post-graduate age 23+

Types of institutions of higher education • Public established by the Ministry of Education (20) • State established by respective ministries (3) • Police insitutions • Military institutions • Health care institutions • Private established by non-government institutions or founders. They have to be approved by the Ministry of Education (11) • Internationalestablished in a foreign country (4)

Accreditation • The Accreditation Commission as the advisory body of the Slovak government observes and evaluates the education, the scientific or artistic activities of Slovak universities or faculties concerning degrees, levels of study, establishment of a public institution of higher education and its faculties. It issues approvals for establishment of private institutions of higher education. • The Accreditation Commission has its chair, vice-chair and members selected from the academic community, proposed by the Ministry of Education and approved by the Slovak Government. The number of members is 21. One third of members has to come from other institutions than those of higher education.

  4. Types of Programs • Bachelor’s degree 3 years, only exceptionally 4 years of study (Architecture, Fine Arts and Design) • Master’s degree usually 5 years of study (for holders of Bachelor’s degree 2 more years of study) • PhD. degree requires 3 to 5 years of study to be completed by dissertation examination, including the defence of dissertation

Overview of Academic Degrees • Bachelor (Bc.) • Magister (Mgr.) • Engineer (Ing.) in technical, agricultural and economic fields • Engineer Architect (Ing.arch.) in architecture and town planning • Doctor of Medicine (MUDr.) • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (MVDr.) Graduates with the “Magister” degree may take examina rigorosa and gain the following degrees: RNDr. - natural sciences PhDr. - arts and humanities JUDr. - law PaeDr. - teacher training ThDr. - theology

  6. Grading scale • A = excellent • B = very good • C = good • D = satisfactory • E = passing • F = failing There are three methods of evaluation • Exam = skúška • Fulfilling of duties, Credit = zápočet • Fulfilling of duties with assessment = klasifikovaný zápočet From the AY 2004-2005, all higher education institutions have adopted the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)

  7. Current Issues of Higher Education • finances • underestimated and not supported science and research at institutions of higher education • missing forms of monitoring the quality standards • non attractive professional environment for young faculty, pending financial appreciation of academic employment
