Overview: • 3 bands replaced 9(?) steps • Progress through bands not based solely on years of service and not automatic • Progress based on evidence based assessment of whether an agreed Professional Standard had been consistently met. • Transferrable to other schools using ISTAA processes.

  5. 7 Elements: • Teachers know their subject content and how to teach that content to their students. * • Teachers know their students and how they learn. • Teachers plan, assess and report for effective learning. • Teachers communicate effectively with their students. • Teachers create and maintain safe and challenging learning environments through the use of classroom management skills. • Teachers continually improve their professional knowledge and practice. • Teachers are actively engaged members of their profession and the wider community. (* slight difference in wording for Preschool Teachers.)

Aspects • Knowledge of and respect and understanding of the social, ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds of students and how these factors may affect learning. • Knowledge of the physical, social and intellectual developmental characteristics of the age group(s) of students. • Knowledge of students’ varies approaches to learning • Knowledge of how students’ skills, interests and prior achievements affect learning. • Knowledge of strategies for addressing student needs.
