  2. Past • Wired Systems • Wireless created in 1970, University of Hawaii • Public use began in 1996 • 802.11 were the first wireless network connections • Insecure, WEP not standard • WEP made standard

Present • WPA 2, MAC filtering, WAPI, smart cards, SSID, tokens, and RF shielding are used to protect networks • WEP was cracked • Plug in wireless cards for cell network wireless or lassoing wireless from phones • Wireless routers are cheap and common • Limited transmission to several kilometers with special equipment, typically 32m inside to 95m outside • Wireless printers • Black Berry & iPhone: Global System for Mobile Communications, General Packet Radio Service • Cell phones use EDGE or G3 Networks

Future • What will the world look like in… • 10 years: • Wireless in major cities • 25 years: • Increase the speed of transfer to match that of wired connections • VPN will become more common • 50 years: • All items will contain wireless components that transmit status to a central server in the home
