  3. What is NUFP? The NUFP Program is a semi structured mentoring program for undergraduate students wishing to explore and better understand the field of student affairs and/or higher education. Students and mentors apply as a pair, and if selected are provided the foundation to establish a semi-structured mentoring relationship at their institution. The mission of NUFP is to increase the number of persons of ethnic-minority, persons with disabilities, and/or persons who identify as LGBT in student affairs in higher education.   5. What is MCSA at Denison? • Established in 1989 • Mission MCSA assumes an active role in helping students find ways to connect. Through a spectrum of learning experiences and educational services we seek to help create and sustain a campus environment where students not only respect themselves but an environment that engenders mutual respect among the study body across ethnic-racial, cultural, religious, gender, (dis)ability and sexual orientation lines. The Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs works very closely with academics, administrative departments, and student organizations to develop interventions which will have a profound impact on students as they move from entry to graduation.

  7. The Black Demands 1969-70 • Hiring of 5 Black Teaching Faculty • Creation of Black Studies Department • 100 additional Black Students Enrolled (43 in 1968) and Full-Time Admissions Recruiter • Two Black Advisors (Student Life Issues) • Commitment to resolve by 1971

MCSA Outcomes • Vertically aligned with the Academic Mission of the College • Emphasis on Student Persistence and Academic Success • Vigorously support students to attend and present at various leadership and diversity oriented conferences (GLBTQA Alphabet Soup Conference, National Asian American Student Conference, Midwest Hispanic Leadership Conference, Big Ten Black Student Leadership Conference).

MCSA & NUFP Outcomes Generating opportunities for students to participate in prestigious programs focused on increasing Diversity in higher education. • Sustained Dialogue, Foundation of Independent Higher Education, NASPA Undergraduate Fellowship Program, Dr. Ronald E. McNair Summer Research Opportunity Program, US Hispanic Leadership Institute.

  14. NUFP Outcomes • NUFP institutions (both home and internship locations) benefit from students participating in academic year and summer programs. • NUFP prepares students for graduate study. • Desire of NUFP alumni to work in Higher Education / Student Affairs . • Identifying other summer research intensive programs for NUFP students to participate. • Exposure to other areas of Higher Education outside of Student Affairs.

Conclusion • Diversity efforts that are in alignment with the mission of Denison University and NASPA, and that uphold the “educational benefits of diversity” as defined by the landmark Grutter and Gratz vs. Bollinger Supreme Court decisions in 2003 (O’Connor, 2003) are not exclusive to MCSA.
