Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development: Raleigh International's Global Initiative

Raleigh International is a UK government-funded charity that empowers young volunteers from the UK and host countries to take action towards sustainable development. Established in 1984, it focuses on creating active citizens through impactful projects and personal development. With over 36,000 alumni worldwide, Raleigh tackles pressing global challenges such as sanitation, health access, and sustainable livelihoods. In India, Tanzania, and Nicaragua, projects aim to improve water and sanitation access, reduce preventable diseases, and promote sustainable agriculture, directly addressing the Millennium Development Goals.

India • 72% of Indians lack access to sanitation facilities • 186,000 children under 5 die from preventable diarrhoeal diseases every year • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation. • Livelihoods/ Natural Resource Development: promote sustainable agricultural livelihoods in rural communities

  6. Tanzania • 67.9% of the population live below the income poverty line • 21 million do not have access to safe water • 20,000 children under five die each year from preventable diarrhoeal disease • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation

  7. Nicaragua • 2.8 million people don't have access to adequate sanitation • Health projects: improve access to water & sanitation • Natural Resource Development projects: develop skills and capacities to manage natural resources and improve sustainable livelihoods in rural communities
