My Journey in EdTech area – 1999 - 2009 • Distance Education Program: Teaching, Applied networking research • Timbaktu Wireless: Field work, Project based learning • OSCAR: Interactive visualizations repository, EdTech research • Computer Masti: Teaching computers in schools, Industry connect
Distance Education Program • Started in 2000 • Network of remote centers • Grew into larger programs - CDEEP, T10KT, IITBombayX • ~100 courses and workshops • ~150K teachers trained • Mtech projects
Timbaktu Wireless Timbaktu-Wireless problem • Play 1 minute of the video - 3:45 to 4:45. What did the students learn?
OSCAR ~300 interactive visualizations, at school and college levels Released in Creative Commons licence ~50K downloads PhD research theses
Computer Masti 2007 - Curriculum for teaching Computers in schools Writing of Books – Grades 1-8 ~100K downloads 2009 - company – InOpen 2016 – Acquired by NextEducation Used by ~1000 schools in India
Key learnings It is not sufficient for us to simply adopt technologies and methods being used elsewhere; We need to train researchers to create educational technologies that are suitable for our local contexts. We need to empower teachers to adapt technologies for their students’ needs.
Educational Technology, IIT Bombay • Inter-Disciplinary Program, started 2010 • 5 Core faculty • Associate faculty from other departments • 25 PhD research Scholars; 12 PhDs graduated • Starting an M.Tech program in 2019 • Includes 2 months internship/field work
What is Educational Technology? Technology of Education Creation and use of Teaching-Learning strategies for student learning and engagement • Use of Peer Discussion Focus is on “What to do” with/without technology Adaptive and Personalized Tutoring Systems Virtual Reality Augmented Pedagogy & Technology for individual and collaborative learning Makerspace MOOCs Games Learning environments Assessment Eye Tracking Analytics
What do we do? – At a glance • Research: • TELoTS: Technology enhanced learning of thinking skills • TUET: Teacher use of educational technologies • EDA: Educational data analytics • EmergE: Emerging technologies • Development: • MOOCs: Massive open online courses – IITBombayX • Trained 5000+ college teachers, 5000+ school teachers • Handbooks: Resources for ET researchers and teachers • RMET, LOBE, … • Tools: To support teaching-learning process • iQuE, iSAT, CuVIS, … Consultancy Outreach Sponsored Projects Sponsored Research Labs
Research Area - TELoTS Design Thinking, Engg Estimation, Troubleshooting, … • Integration with Domain Concepts Thinking Skills Pedagogy and Learning Environments

Outreach • Training workshops • Mentoring workshops • Strong Alumni participation • Conferences
T4E conference – Technology for Education TENTH IEEE CONFERENCE ON TECHNOLOGY FOR EDUCATION (T4E) 2019 Dec 9 - 11, 2019, Goa, India http://t4e2019.unigoa.ac.in Paper submission deadline - July 18th Themes: Pedagogical Strategies and Interventions for Technology-Enhanced Learning Technologies to Improve Access to Education Development of Technologies to Support Education
Summary: What are our students trained in? • Theories of learning and pedagogy • Design and evaluation of learning environments that effectively integrate pedagogy and technology, including face-to-face and online/remote settings • Research methodologies, application of statistical methods, multimodal and mixed-method data analysis • Work collaboratively on complex interdisciplinary projects • Good fit for: Learning & Development roles; Training-related products; Research & Evaluation of socio-technology projects
Other EdTech related projects at IIT Bombay • National Mission projects (MHRD) • NPTEL • IITBombayX • Spoken Tutorial • Virtual Labs • eYantra • Centers • Center for Distance Engineering Education Programmes • Parimaland PramodChaudhari Center for Learning and Teaching
Key learnings In education, the scaling problem is not solved by taking a generalized solution to all, but by: • innovating a large number of varied local solutions and making them available to all, and (ii) empowering local adaptation and contextualization of these solutions, through technological facilitation and pedagogical training.
