  1. Ignatius of Loyola & the Jesuits By: Alexia Tent & Kyle Taibot

  2. What happened? • Because of the effects of Jesuits, the catholic church started to regain power against the Protestants • Ignatius, ran the Jesuits like a military and made them focus on education • Jesuits made it clear that obedience was needed in the church

  3. People who were involved • Ignatius OF LOYOLA • The Jesuits • Pope Paul III • Priest Matteo ricci

  4. Ignatius of Loyola • Ignatius was a Spanish noble who's military carrier had ended abruptly when he was wounded in battle • The soldier needed something to occupy his time until he could walk again, so he read the only material available to him in the castle—biographies of saints • the ideas in the books soon filled his mind with the desire to find a religious purpose, and he began to see religious visions. • The books and visions inspired Ignatius to change his life—to become a “soldier of God” rather than a “soldier of man.” Ignatius later founded a religious teaching order still active today—the Jesuits

  5. Jesuits • They were known as the society of Jesus • Part of the catholic religious orders • They concentrated on education

  6. Pope Paul III • He noticed the new religion orders • He approved the order in 1539

  7. Priest Matteo ricci • He traveled to china and preached Christianity at the court of the Ming emperor • To make his message relevant to Chinese needs, ricci learned to speak Chinese and dressed in Chinese clothing • ricci shared Chinese scholars his knowledge of European arts and science

  8. How does this event show religious disunity in Europe? • Their work made it new in the church by emphasizing on the spiritual and service part of the church • jesuits were combatting against the protestant reformation • They were overcoming the protestants so then they regained power
