  2. Attitudes and Beliefs • AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety Poll (2501 drivers surveyed) • 95% said it was unacceptable behavior • 87% said it was a “very serious safety threat” [90% thought the same of drunk driving] • 21% admitted to having texted or emailed recently while driving

  3. One Subject: Robert Smith [recent college graduate 22] • “It’s convenient [rather text than take time on a phone call]” • “I put the phone on top of the steering wheel and text with both thumbs. . . . Sometimes I’ll look up and realize there is a car sitting there and swerve around it” • “I’m pretty sure that someday it is going to come back to bite me”

  4. Virginia Tech Transportation Institute Study • Ss were 200 drivers who took turns driving 55 long-haul trucks involving 7 companies • Trucks were outfitted with 5 cameras each to detect texting • 1 facing the road • 2 on side mirrors • 1 focused on the dashboard (from over the shoulder) • 1 focused on the driver’s face • Software was installed to detect severe and sudden decelerations as a measure of crashes and near crashes

  5. Results • 21 crashes • 197 near crashes (“imminent collision narrowly avoided”) • 3,000 near crashes not imminent • 1,200 unintended lane deviations • Texting while driving increases collision risk 23X over driving while not texting

  6. Laboratory ResearchUniversity of Utah • Data were gathered in 2008 and 2009 • Ss were college students using sophisticated driving simulators

  7. Results • While texting students showed an 8X greater crash risk than when not texting

  8. Laws • As of August 2009 only 14 states make texting while driving illegal
