Bridging Science and Design for Synthesis of Heterogeneous Functional Materials

This document outlines the strategic evolution and objectives of a center focused on integrating science-based design with the synthesis of heterogeneous functional materials. Through ongoing research, modeling, and simulation, the center aims to enhance emergent multiphysics functionality. Recent activities include scientific reviews, presentations, and organizational assessments to streamline focus and improve operational efficiency. The ongoing emphasis is on fostering collaboration, setting future goals, and building a foundation for long-term proposals that advance material science.

Knowledgeable person in field must be able to immediately tell if what they are doing relates to it and how their work fits into the theme.” Modeling Simulation (the science of) Multi-scale heterogeneity as a foundation for emergent multiphysics properties in functional material systems. “.. emergent properties are properties of a group that are not possible when any of the individual elements of that group act alone. Cities, the brain, ant colonies and complex chemical and material systems, for instance, all exhibit emergent properties that serve to illustrate the concept.”
