  2. The United States of America Children start school when they are 6. 1-6th grade: Elementary school 7-9th grade: Junior high school 10-12th grade: Senior high school 18-21 years old: a university Grades are marks: A – 5+ B – 5 C – 4 (the lowest grade to stay at school) D – 3 F – 2

  3. Primary and Secondary Schools • Classes are also grades: from 1st to 12th • First is grammar or elementary school (1st-8th grades). There are also elementary schools (1st-6th grade) and junior high school (7th-9th grade). • Subjects: Reading, Maths, Languages (English, Spanish, German, French), Science, Music, Art and Physical Education (P.E.) • The class has the same teacher. Only for Art, Music and P.E. children have special teachers.

  4. High school • Subjects: English (Grammar and Literature), American history, American government, European history, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, a foreign language (Spanish, French, German), Music, Art, P.E. • a different teacher and a different group of students • five compulsory subjects • five subjects, P.E., lunch, two hours for library or a club

  5. Higher Education • more than 3,000 colleges and universities • good high school record and test scores Tests • SAT: Scholastic Assessment Test or Scholastic Aptitude Test • ACT: American College Testing • GRE: Graduate Record Examination

  6. Great Britain • Education is compulsory between ages 5-16 3-5 years old: Kindergarten 1-6th form (5-10 years old): Primary school 7-10th form (11-14 years old): Secondary school 11-12th form (15-16 years old): High school 18-21 years old: a university • Attending school is not compulsory • Most students wear a school uniform
