  1. Empower your Learners for Remote Learning Success The COVID-19 crisis has created new challenges for students as they transition to learning outside of the classroom. And while we have yet to see great increases in dropout rates or lower attainment, we know that students have significant vulnerabilities that might impact their advancement in the very near future. These vulnerabilities often come in the form of life skills. According to a new study, millennial students entering college demonstrate significant gaps in basic life skills, like time management, budgeting and independent study. These skills are necessary to effectively navigate the world of college, and without them, students exhibit lower levels of confidence, increased anxiety disorders and higher dropout rates. To address these life skill shortages, four-year universities, community colleges and vocational schools alike have placed increased emphasis on academic advising, student services and soft-skill building to support students who come to post secondary education under-prepared and find themselves overwhelmed by its rigors. And as a result of these efforts, researchers have seen upticks in persistence. A recent report from the Center for Community College Student Engagement shows that effective advising can impact on student retention and thus college graduation rates. But what happens when these resources are overwhelmed or unavailable? As more campuses close in response to Covid-19, and students become further removed from the supportive services that are designed to help move them toward graduation, the challenges of learning remotely will start to sink in. For example, imagine how challenging it will be for a student who struggles with time management to stay on top of electronic coursework –that’s often much more flexible – without the structure of the classroom to guide them. Similarly, think about how a student who struggles with problem solving might be hamstrung and demotivated by the technical difficulties that are bound to arise within the remote learning environment. And while we haven’t seen the impact of these challenges on attainment and graduation yet, without preemptive action, we most likely will.

  2. Students – especially those who were already struggling – need support adjusting to the new normal brought about by COVID-19. And, like dealing with the virus itself, academic institutions shouldn’t wait for this problem to completely manifest itself before they begin addressing it.
