  1. ECE5320 MechatronicsAssignment#01: Literature Survey on Sensors and Actuators Topic: Oxygen Sensor Prepared by: Joe Burton Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering Utah State University 3/9/2012

  2. Outline • Reference list • To probe further • Major applications • Basic working principle illustrated • A typical sample configuration in application (application notes) • Major specifications • Limitations • And many more relevant issues in applications (such as, how to choose, cost information, where to buy etc.) ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  3. Reference list • http://www.boschautoparts.com/OxygenSensors/Pages/OxygenSensorDesign.aspx • http://www.autopartswarehouse.co ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  4. To explore further (survival pointers of web references etc) • Operation of Lambda oxygen sensors: • Have a wide range • Very small package http://www.picoauto.com/applications/lambda-sensor.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  5. Major applications • There are many applications of oxygen sensors or commonly referred to as O2 sensor. • This slide set is based on a control system application of O2 sensor, EFI system. • The EFI system is used to control fuel delivery in a wide variety of vehicles. • From small power equipment to large trucks. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. EFI has an open loop and closed loop type of systems • Closed loop systems use O2 sensors as a feedback reference of how the fuel mixture post combustion is doing. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. http://www.globaldensoproducts.com/em/gem/index.html • The arrows point to the locations of the oxygen sensors ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. http://www.globaldensoproducts.com/em/gem/ees/index.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Basic Working Principleshttp://www.globaldensoproducts.com/em/gem/ees/oxygen_sensor.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. There are several companies that manufacture Oxygen sensors. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Types of O2 sensors As with the many manufactures of O2 sensors there are several styles depending on the intended use. The couple that will be discussed here are: • Planar • Thimble • Wideband ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Bosch planar ceramic technology • The ceramic element in Bosch planar type oxygen sensors is created by printing multiple layers of protective, insulating, adhesive, and conductive materials, including platinum, on several ceramic layers. These layers are pressed together and fired in a kiln and the resulting element is lightweight and incredibly hard and strong, for best-in-class performance and maximum service life. http://www.boschautoparts.com/OxygenSensors/Pages/OxygenSensorDesign.aspx ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Bosch thimble ceramic technology • In Bosch Premium Thimble Type Oxygen Sensors, the zirconium ceramic thimble projects into the exhaust system. The oxygen sensor's ceramic element becomes electrically conductive at high temperature. Then the O2 sensor element sends voltage signals back to your vehicle's engine management system to regulate the fuel to air ratio, for optimum efficiency http://www.boschautoparts.com/OxygenSensors/Pages/OxygenSensorDesign.aspx ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Thimble ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Key Features of Thimble/ Narrow Band O2 Sensor ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. http://www.boschautoparts.com/OxygenSensors/Pages/WidebandOxygenSensors.aspxhttp://www.boschautoparts.com/OxygenSensors/Pages/WidebandOxygenSensors.aspx ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Where to Buy? • Commonly used automotive applications can be purchased on-line or at local automotive parts store. (http://www.autopartswarehouse.com, Autozone, Napa, O’Reilly, etc.) • Custom applications can be purchased on-line. ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  20. Price? A simple narrow band, thimble type sensor is the lowest cost. It is about $14.00 ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  21. 5 Wire heated Wideband On the other hand can run you about $535.00 ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  22. Which is the Best? • It depends on your application • The wideband is nice for its range of operation • Reads air/fuel mixtures from 9.0 to 18.0 • The thimble is relatively inexpensive • Only reads a narrow range • For simplistic designs ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
