  3. Males: Total length, 870 mm; Tail, 146 mm; Hind foot, 171 mm; Females: 772-144-158 mm. Weight of adults, 5-9 kg, occasionally as much as 16 kg in old animals. Average External Measurements:

  4. Where Are They Found?

  5. Bobcats are adapted to a wide variety of habitats including swamps, deserts, and mountain ranges. PREFERRED HABITAT:

  6. FOOD HABITS : Bobcats are opportunistic and will attempt to take almost any prey available, including insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Mammalian prey, however, is often the most common prey in the bobcat diet. Bobcats most frequently kill animals weighing 1.5 to 12 pounds (700 g-5.5 kg). Cottontail rabbits appear to be the principal prey of bobcats throughout bobcat's range.

  7. Bobcats are not commonly preyed upon. But Kittens may be taken by foxes, owls, mountain lions, coyotes and adult male bobcats. PREDATORS :

  8. REPRODUCTION : Female bobcats are capable of breeding at 1 year of age. Males are sexually mature at 2 years of age. Both sexes remain reproductively active throughout life. One male generally mates with several females. Gestation is about 62 days.

  9. Generally, only one litter is produced per year. On average two to four kittens are born. The kittens are raised solely by their mother. They are weaned in about 7 to 8 weeks. OFFSPRING:

  10. In the wild the average life span is about12-13 years. In captivity the average life span is up to 25-33 years. LONGEVITY :

  11. HUMAN PREDATORS Bobcats are hunted and trapped by humans. In the last 20 years, the bobcat has been the most heavily harvested and traded of the cat species. World demand for bobcat fur rose gradually in the late 1960s and early 1970s and jumped in the mid-1970s.

  12. In the US the bobcat is totally protected in 10 states; in Canada, nowhere; and in Mexico, hunting is regulated in five states, and shooting of suspected livestock predators is permitted on a limited basis. CURRENT STATUS :

  13. A female Lynx Rufus was confiscated by the Border Patrol, when someone was attempting to keep her as a house pet. She was then rescued and adopted by the “Lamar Bruni-Vergara Environmental Science Center”. She was approximately 8 weeks when she first arrived, now she is 7½ months old. The staff affectionately named her Lucky. LUCKY :
