  2. Guiding Children’s Behavior • Be a role model -“Actions speak louder than words.” • Set limits -Boundaries/Rules. Helps them understand appropriate behavior. • Positive Reinforcement -Encourages a particular behavior. Good behavior wins attention and praise.

  3. Dealing with Inappropriate Behavior • Child’s age should depend on response to behavior. • Adult has to consider: • Does the child understand that behavior was wrong? They have to be told action is wrong. • Was behavior intentional or an accident? Breaking something or spilling milk.

  4. Using Punishment Effectively • Teach that there are consequences for poor behavior/choices. • Show disapproval of behavior but love for child. • 1st time rule broken- warning/reminder • 2nd time rule broken- proper punishment

  5. Negative Reinforcement • Discourages repeating unacceptable behavior. • Methods: • Natural Consequences: suffer from result of action. • Logical Consequences: outcome has connection to behavior. • Loss of Privileges: related to misbehavior. • Time-out: chance to calm down & gain control

  6. Poor Dicipline • Bribing • Making children to promise to behave • Shouting or yelling • Shaming or belittling • Threatening to withhold love • Exaggerating the consequences

  7. Regular Guidance • Clearly make the rules and apply consequences in same manner whenever incident occurs. -limits confusion - Builds trust and confidence • Caregivers must both agree to rules and ways of enforcing them.
