4. Understanding - We are Children of God • Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light and find out what pleases the Lord. (Eph 5:6-10)

5. Love – How do we Love • Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us gave himself up for us a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. (Eph 5:1-2) • A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34)

6. Obedience – But I… • Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (Ephesians 6:1) • “Honor your father and mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise -”that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3) • Fathers, do no exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. 7. Discipline – Col 3:20-21 • Children are to obey their parents in everything. - Disobedience to parents is designated in the Old Testament as rebellion against God and was severely punished (Ex. 21:17; Lev. 20:9). Jesus set an example for children by obeying Joseph and His mother Mary (Luke 2:51). Obedience to parents pleases the Lord. This does not suggest that obeying one’s parents merits salvation for a child. Rather, obedience reflects God’s design for order in the home. • As Paul wrote elsewhere, “It is right” (dikaion, “just” or “proper”) for children to obey their parents (Eph. 6:1). • Proverbs 3:11-12, Hebrews 12:6 Walvoord, J. 8. Teaching – Discipline with Love • He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. (Proverbs 13:24) • Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him. (Proverbs 22:15) • The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother. (Proverbs 29:15) • Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. (Luke 2:51-52) • Proverbs 1:8

9. Perseverance • Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:2-6) • Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. (Romans 5:1-5)
