In Text Citation: • Many girls are taught to be compliant and nurturing, and are given chores such as setting the table or helping prepare dinner. A lot of effort is put into ensuring individuals conform to “gender appropriate” behaviour. But, gender is not biological. It is “culture [that] determines gender roles and what is masculine and feminine” (“Gender & Gender Identity”, 2013). • In Sweden Toys R’ Us has shaken things up. As of lately, their toy catalog showed a girl wielding a toy gun rather than a boy. Also, the catalog displays a boy playing with a pink dollhouse (Kooser, 2012). This is an interesting step towards breaking down gender stereotypes in the toy industry. However, not all toy companies are following this trend. For example, Walmart is still displays stereotypical images of little girls playing with kitchen sets and the boys playing with toy science labs (Kooser, 2012).
Example of Footnote Citation: • Men were expected to be confident, powerful, and ambitious to succeed in that role. If a man did not measure up to these standards, they were seen as failures in society and to their family. Women were excluded from obtaining their own wages because it was believed they did not have the characteristics to succeed in the workplace. They were seen as fragile and pure, and were “best suited” to be safely providing for their family in the home. This called gender discrimination. Gender discrimination means “an exclusion or restriction made on the basis of gender roles and relations that prevents a person from enjoying full human rights. Gender roles and gender discrimination have led to problems such as the glass ceiling effect for women. • 1 See article (“Why Gender”, n.d) for further information on gender discrimination.
