  3. “Attitude” Defined • Attitude: • 1. Manner, disposition, feeling, position, etc., with regard to a person or thing; tendency or orientation, esp. of the mind: a negative attitude; group attitudes. • 2. Position or posture of the body appropriate to or expressive of an action, emotion, etc.: a threatening attitude; a relaxed attitude. Source: Dictionary.com

  4. Attitudes What should our attitude be toward Murmuring?

  5. Introduction • Many warnings concerning Murmuring! • This is a tendency of some Christians! • Especially of those who perceive themselves as Godly! • They ignore God’s warnings! • They are deceived! • Christians are commanded to not be deceived! • 1 Cor. 6:9-10, 15:33; Gal. 6:7

  8. “Murmur” Defined • A half-suppressed or muttered complaint : grumbling! • Webster’s on-line dictionary • To make a low or indistinct sound, esp. continuously; to speak in a low tone or indistinctly; to complain in a low tone or in private. • Synonyms - To mutter is to utter words in a low, grumbling way, often voicing complaint or discontent, not meant to be fully audible: to mutter complaints. • Dictionary.com

  9. Old Testament Examples!

Numbers 16 • Dathan, Korah, Abiram and their followers murmured against Moses & Aaron • Earth opened and swallowed them and their houses – vs. 32 • 250 men killed by God with fire – vs. 35 • Some murmured that Moses & Aaron were responsible, God killed 14,700 by plague – vss. 41, 49 • This was murmuring against God’s established authority • We need to learn from this O.T. warning! It Is All of These!

Children of Israel • Murmured while in the wilderness; that generation was destroyed there! • Murmured for lack of water – Ex. 15:24; 17:3 • Murmured about food – Ex. 16:2-3 • Murmured in fear of the children of Anak • Num. 14:1-3 • God’s judgment of their murmuring is stated in Numbers 14:27-30 • Murmuring must be avoided by Christians! It Is All of These!

Paul warned the Corinthians! • Discusses the Israelites - 1 Cor. 10:5-10 • “Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted” (vs. 6). • “Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come” (vs. 10).

Jude warned about Murmuring! • “These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage” (vs. 16). • “For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ” (vs. 4)

Christians Attitude on Murmuring? • Recognize it is sinful -1 Cor. 10:10 • Can cause much harm to others • Discontent, discouragement, apathy • Murmuring sow discord among brethren! • Prov. 6:19 • Must examine ourselves! • 2 Cor. 13:5 • Never offer receptive ears to such! • Go to the person or to the proper ones! • Exhort members to cease murmuring! • Phil. 2:14-15 • Exercise discipline on those who do not repent of this sin! • 2 Thess. 3:15

  17. Conclusion! • Listen to examples of the O.T.! • Heed the commands of the N.T.! • Realized that God condemns murmuring! • Examine yourselves! • Repent if your are a murmurer! • Get busy in the Lord’s Kingdom and you will not have time to murmur!
