  5. How does an essay begin? The introduction is usually one paragraph that introduces the topic and the central idea of the essay. It introduces the entire essay not just one paragraph.

  6. The introduction has two purposes: it introduces the topic of the essayandit catches your reader’s attention

  7. Even though the introduction is the first paragraph of the essay, it does not have to be written first. Some writers design and write this part last or at another point in their writing process.

There are many ways to begin an essay: • The Turnabout – in which you open with a statement contrary to your actual thesis • The Dramatic Entrance – in which you open with a narrative, description, or dramatic example related to the topic • The Relevant Quotation – in which you open with a quotation related to the topic. • The Funnel – in which the ideas progress from the general to the specific.

  15. Each body paragraph explains or develops in detail one subtopic mentioned in the thesis statement. It has a topic sentence,supporting sentences, and sometimes a concluding sentence

  16. Transitionsare used between paragraphs to show how one paragraph is related to another. They can tell if the topic of the next paragraph follows the same line of thought or reverses direction.

  17. How does an essay end? This paragraph is the conclusion. It concludes the thought developed in the essay. It summarizes the main points of the essay.

  18. The conclusion is the last paragraph. It has three purposes:1.It signals the end of the essay.2.It reminds the reader of your main points.3.It leaves the reader with your final thoughts on the topic

  19. It should refer to your thesis or main point.It should sum up the support points you have developed in the essay.It could make a further observation or a point.

  20. One of the best ways to end an essay is to refer directly to something in the introduction.You can also paraphrase the thesis statement.
