  2. Training • Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary says it’s “the process by which one is taught so as to make fit, qualified or proficient.” • In the secular world, it can occur in a formal class setting, “on-the-job” (OJT) or one-on-one with a mentor. • So, how do we train men to be elders?

  3. Foundation Premises • Elder = Bishop = Overseer • “…If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work.” (1 Tim. 3:1) • Desire + Humility = “trainable” heart • Points to consider

  4. Points to Consider How do we train men to: • Study • Serve • Teach • Show hospitality • Shepherd

  5. Study • “(For a bishop)…holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught,” (Titus 1:9) • In Christian homes at an early age • With a Christian spouse, family member or close friend • In church Bible class program • By self study of the Bible

  6. Serve • Peter’s exhortation…“serving as overseers” (1 Pet. 5:2) • How? “Willingly…eagerly…as examples to the flock” (1 Pet. 5:2-3) • Christ, the ultimate example (Matt. 20:28) • A servant puts the needs of others ahead of his own. • Outgrowth of Bible study and application

  7. Teach • “A bishop then must be…able to teach;” (1 Tim. 3:2) • Study + Serve = Teach • Bible classes • Bible studies • Practice makes perfect

  8. Show Hospitality • “A bishop then must be…hospitable,” (1 Tim. 3:2) • Hospitable is to be fond of guests or given to hospitality • Trainable qualification • Support of spouse is key to success • Avoid excuses, practice makes perfect

  9. Shepherd • Peter’s exhortation…“Shepherd the flock of God which is among you,” (1 Pet. 5:2) • Christ, the ultimate example (John 10:11) • An elder’s highest priority • How? Guide, feed, protect, nurture and sacrifice. • Eternal accountability (Heb. 13:17)
