  2. CaON report • ECOC report (trends, breakthroughs and alignment with  the CaON outlook and strategy) • Presentation  on the new  FP7 funded ERMES project • (Embedded Resonant and ModulablE Self-Tuning Laser Cavity for Next Generation Access Network Transmitter) : FP7-ICT-2011-7 from the Photonics Components Unit- Alessandro Lachelini of Alcatel-Lucent Italy. • Planning for FuNeMS 2012, Berlin 4-6 July, paper submissions and reviewers. • CaON will motivate cluster projects to produce technical papers at the WP level • CaON strategy white paper: status updates • CaON standardisation task force • Identify collaborative potential and efforts • CaON informal working meeting at FIA

  3. ECOC report • Optical Communication in a Trading Data Center (Andrew F. Bach, Senior Vice President, Global Head Of Network Services, NYSE Euronext, USA) • Will they converge on a common GMPLS fabric starting in the core of the data center and radiating out for 50 to 100 miles? • What will be the speed of the next customer connections? For sure 10G now, but will the industry skip 40G and go directly to 100G relegating 40G to server connections only? • What’s next? – 400G or 1Tb running over hollow core fiber?

  4. ECOC report II • Trent 1: Flexible and Elastic Technologies and Networks: Flexi-grid, Gridless, Multi-rate, Multi-granular, Flexible transponders, Adaptive modulation format, Programmable optical devices, Spectral selective devices, Spectrum defragmentation, Monitoring, Control plane • Trends 2: New Trends in Access: OFDM and Alternative Modulation Formats for Access, Optical Avionic Networks, Green Access, WDM-OFDM-PONs, Optical access based on 100 GbE, DPSK OCDMA, WDM for aerospace applications, Transceivers' for aircraft networks, fibre sensing on aircrafts • Trends 3: Multicore and MicrostructuredFibres and Applications: Multicore fibres, Spatial multiplexing in multi-core fibres, multimode amplifiers, multimode transmission

  5. ECOC report III • Trend 4: New Optical Network Applications • Data Centres, Financial transactions • Cloud computing (ALU Bell labs, Juniper, Google) • Alien wavelengths (BT) • Virtual PC applications (TID) • HPC (Google, UCDavis) • Virtualisation (GEYSERS, OFELIA, KDDI) • OpenFlow (KDDI, ADVA, Google, BUPT, Uessex) • Video streaming (BBC, NTT, Essex)
