  1. GOVERNOR’S HONORS PROGRAM Agriscience & Biotechnology

  2. What is GHP? • A 6-week summer program for top high school students in Georgia. • Held on the campus of Valdosta State University. • Students are selected for specific majors in academics (math, science, English, etc.), fine arts, and career areas.

  3. Each year, 15 students are selected for Agriscience and Biotechnology.

  4. Opportunities • Students get to select a “minor” course for the summer from any of the other major areas plus a few additional ones such as Personal Fitness, Counseling, and Computer Technology.

  5. The Daily Routine • Students live in the college dorms and eat fabulous meals at the Palms Dining Hall!

  7. Class Schedule • Major classes meet 8am – noon on Monday to Saturday. • Minors meet from 1:30 – 4:00 Monday – Friday.

  9. Agriscience Activities • This summer, students had the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of challenging Agriscience activities including labs, research, working with guest experts, and taking field trips.

  18. GPS Mapping Activity with Sidney Bell from Oconee Co. High School

  19. Guest Instructor: Maria Navarro of UGA on International Agriculture

  20. Other special guests: • Brice Nelson and Dr. David Knauft of UGA College of Ag and Environmental Sciences spoke about biotechnology and preparing for careers in agriculture.

  21. Other special guests: • Mr. John Cook from Select Sires provided lab instruction on reproductivetechnology.

  22. Mr. Tommy Irvin, Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture, spoke to the class on the importance of technology to agriculture in the state.

  25. Field Trips • The class visited and participated in plant breeding and genetic engineering lab activities at the Coastal Plain Experiment Station in Tifton under the direction of Dr. Kenneth Seeboldt, Plant Pathologist.

  27. After class time and on Sundays, students have many activities in which to participate such as seminars, performances by the fine arts majors, and recreational activities. They may leave campus to attend area churches if they choose on Sunday mornings.

  30. GHP Fun Run • Agriscience majors had 100% participation in the one mile event and Zach was our top student in the 5K run.

  31. The Agriscience Challenge • One of the highlights of the summer was the Agriscience Challenge. Guests were “challenged” to complete 6 skill stations developed by the Agriscience students. It was a very popular event with GHP students and faculty.

  34. Sad Goodbyes at GHP • On the last day of GHP, a Convocation Ceremony is held. We were honored to have Bo Dotson from Agriscience selected to speak.

  35. Selection Process for GHP • Teachers can nominate up to 2 students in the fall. • School, county, region, and eventually state eliminations are conducted between October and February. • The guidance office of each school should have all necessary forms by September.

  36. SELECTION CRITERIA • Students are selected based on academic ability, teacher recommendation, and additional application materials (portfolio, resume, research proposal, etc.) • Interviews are conducted as part of the selection process. • Each school may have up to 2 students advance in the area of Agriscience and Biotechnology.

  37. What makes A GOOD GHP CANDIDATE in Agriscience? STUDENTS WHO: -are willing to take risks and try something different. Will take advantage of all the opportunities at GHP -self-starters who will complete work even if it is not for a grade -enjoy working with others who may have different backgrounds or lifestyles -really love agriculture and especially science

  38. Six weeks is a long time to be away from home, but the memories are worth every minute of it!
