Naming Files • Allowed 255 characters • Can use capitals • Windows is not case sensitive • Spaces allowed in names • Numbers allowed in names • Can not use • / < > ” \ : | * ?
File Extensions • Added to file name • Indicates file type or format • Common extensions • doc, txt, wps, rtf, mdb, xls, bmp, gif, jpeg • wav, mp3, avi, mov, html, • exe, com, sys, dll, vbx, ocx
Windows Explorer • Right click on start button, choose explore • Folders pane • See all folders on computer • Name pane • See individual files inside folder • Change views
Windows Explorer • Device letters • Folders contain subfolders • Path or address of folder • Use search to find specific file
Change Name of a File • Right click on file or folder • Menu comes up • Choose “rename” option
Copy Files and Folders • Right click, choose copy from menu • Highlight, go to “Edit” and then “Copy” • Use “Send to” function • Use “Copy Disk” function
Delete Files and Folders • Right click, choose delete from menu • Highlight, go to “Edit” and then “Delete” • Use delete key on keyboard • Stored in Recycle Bin • Can retrieve from Recycle Bin • Can not retrieve from floppy or pen drive • Reformatting storage
Backing Up Files • Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Backup • Copy folder or file to more than one location
