  1. Final Research Project Andrew Murphy

  2. Research Question Does a higher level of education decrease the likelihood of crime in young adults?

  3. Literature Review Sutherland (2011) stated that the succes, or lack thereof, plays a considerable role in people offending A unified ideology can bring forth the most meaningful traits in the society. This is true with the relationship between education and juvenile crime (Sturova 1998) Lochner and Moretti (2003) and Hansen (2003) stated that people with lower education were more at risk for criminal activity However, Bloomfield (2001) offers programs, such as work study and other things, to improve education and reduce crime among juviniles

  4. Works Cited Bloomfield, Masse. 2001. “Proposal on Crime and Education.” Education. 109(1): 32-37 Hansen, Kirstine. 2003. “Education and the Crime-Age Profile.” British Journal of Criminology. 43(1): 141- 168 Lochner, Lance and Enrico Moretti. 2003. "The Effect Of Education On Crime: Evidence From Prison Inmates, Arrests, And Self-Reports," American Economic Review. 94(1): 155-189 Sturova, M.P. 2001. “The System of Education and Youth Crime.” Russian Social Science Review. 42(5): 36-49 Sutherland, Alison. 2011. “The Relationship Between Scholl and Youth Offending.” Social Policy Journal of New Zealand. 37(1): 51-69

  5. Data Sources Used For this lab, I utilized the crime and Education. Specifically I looked at the anycr(any crime) and hgc(highest grade completed) variables

  6. Data Analysis Fill in columns S and U in red Delete column T Delete all non highlighted Highlight anycr column Find, replace, replace all 0’s with No and all 1’s with yes Highlight the data Insert, Pivot Table

  7. Pivot Table A Drag anycr variable into the row column Drag hgc variable into the value field Change field value settings to average

  8. Pivot Table B Drag anycr into value field Drag hgc into row label Show value as, % of grand total

  9. Findings • Based on this graph, the average grade completed was almost the same between those who did and did not commit crimes. This was just the average and this could just reflect a higher disparity of younger people taking the survey.

  10. Findings cont. • This graph showed more of an answer to my question. While the highest total was among high school graduates, the percentage of people who commit crimes dropped considerably for each following grade.
