  8. Linkedin • World’s largest professional network • 175 million users • Can upload resume • Used to help find jobs

  9. Myspace • 100 million accounts in 2006 • Fell to under 37 million by 2011 • Facebook is the cause for the rapid decline in users • Justin Timberlake now owns and is trying to revive the company

  10. Facebook • Facebook is the worlds largest social network • Founded by Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University in 2004 • Facebook has about 900 million users • Mission: make the world “more open and connected.”

  11. Facebook Users • 45% of facebook users are older than 26. • Women ages 18-34 outnumber men who use facebook. • Teenagers make up 12% of the overall facebook audience

  12. Benefits • Connect with family and friends • Share photographs • Stay informed of friend’s events, accomplishments, and special occasions • Companies use advertising for promotions

  13. Drawbacks to facebook • Cyber bullying • Employers are beginning to review potential applicant’s profiles • Scams • Privacy

  14. What is Cyber Bullying? • Bullying through: • Email • Instant messaging • Chat rooms • Websites • Cell phones

  15. Cyber Bullying • More than half of teens have been victims of cyber bullying • Victims are more likely to have low self esteem • Victims are more likely to consider suicide

  16. Help! • Talk to your parents • Talk to your teachers • National Suicide Prevention Line 1-800-273-TALK

Media • In September a student at Clovis High School used facebook to bully students • Total of 10 students came forward • More challenging to deal with since this does not occur on the playground • This behavior is considered harassment and is ILLEGAL • Police are investigating the incident • Punishable by jail time and/or fines

Job Outlook • Facebook can affect your ability to get a job • 8% of US companies with 1,000 or more employees have fired employees over posts (disrespectful pictures or comments) • Employers keep an eye on their worker’s personal life • 15% have disciplined employees for violating posting policies • According to a Microsoft study 79% of managers and recruiters look at facebook pages. Companies want to make sure their employees project a professional image • According to the Telegraph 4 out of 10 students are worried about what they post and how it will affect their employment opportunities • New college graduates, the ones who use social media frequently, are most likely to be the target of Web research.

  19. What Can Cost You a Job • Risqué pictures • Pictures of heavy alcohol or drug use • Bad grammar and poor writing skills • Offensive comments

Posts That Led to Termination • Philadelphia Eagles employee lost his job for calling the team “retarded” • Waitress from a pizza company was fired for complaining about customers on her facebook page • New England cheerleader fired for posing with an unconscious boy covered with “distasteful graffiti” (i.e. ethnic slurs) • Employee was fired for surfing facebook while being at home sick. Her comment “she could not work in front of a computer as she needed to lie in the dark.” • A job applicant stated on his facebook page he is an impressive hacker and he was applying to be a computer security analyst.

Celebrities and Social Media • Donald Trump posted tweets regarding his thoughts on the election results • Trump referred to the election as a “total sham and a travesty” • Posted more than 10 angry tweets • Trump deleted some tweets one including a call to revolution or incorrectly stating Obama lost the popular vote.

Celebrities and Social Media • Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame is afraid social media could lead to her death • The 22 year old actress is afraid someone will murder her if people monitor her constantly • "Like I'm going to die because somebody is going to say where I am and somebody is going to kill me. Someone's going to Twitter my location and then it's going to be like, boom," she explained. • Neither she or her possible boyfriend Robert Pattinson have a facebook or twitter account

  23. Be Careful What You Post • What is the lesson from these examples • It will stay on the internet forever • The world is becoming more connected • Therefore it is important watch what you post • What you think is cool today may cause trouble in the future • Think Before You Tweet
