  6. Bible Survey - Amos Theme: Corporate Injustice Leads To Corporate Punishment

  7. Bible Survey - Amos Amos 2:6-8 Thus says the LORD, "For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke its punishment, Because they sell the righteous for money And the needy for a pair of sandals. 7 These who pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the helpless Also turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father resort to the same girl In order to profane My holy name. 8 On garments taken as pledges they stretch out beside every altar, And in the house of their God they drink the wine of those who have been fined.”

  8. Bible Survey - Amos Amos 5:11-12 Therefore because you impose heavy rent on the poor And exact a tribute of grain from them, Though you have built houses of well-hewn stone, Yet you will not live in them; You have planted pleasant vineyards, yet you will not drink their wine. 12 For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are great, You who distress the righteous and accept bribes And turn aside the poor in the gate.

  9. Bible Survey - Amos Amos 8:4-6 Hear this, you who trample the needy, to do away with the humble of the land, 5 saying, "When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain, And the Sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales, 6 So as to buy the helpless for money And the needy for a pair of sandals, And that we may sell the refuse of the wheat?"

  10. Bible Survey - Amos Amos 9:13-15 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "When the plowman will overtake the reaper And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the mountains will drip sweet wine And all the hills will be dissolved. 14 Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit. 15 I will also plant them on their land, And they will not again be rooted out from their land Which I have given them," Says the LORD your God.

  11. Bible Survey - Amos Purpose of Writing: Amos wrote to convict the nation of Israel of her sin. He was horrified that a nation which claimed the Lord as their God would condone the sorts of social sins which he observed there. He called on the people to repent from their sins and to worship God in truth, not only in form. He also encouraged the people with a future time of God’s blessing which would make their current economic prosperity look like a depression.

  12. Bible Survey - Amos Christ in Amos: • The Judgment of God • The Intercession of Amos • The Restoration of the Kingdom

  13. Bible Survey - Amos The Judgment of God Amos 7:11 "For thus Amos says, 'Jeroboam will die by the sword and Israel will certainly go from its land into exile.'"

  14. Bible Survey - Amos John 5:22 For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son.

  15. Bible Survey - Amos The Intercession of Amos Amos 7:1-3 Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, He was forming a locust-swarm when the spring crop began to sprout. And behold, the spring crop was after the king's mowing. 2 And it came about, when it had finished eating the vegetation of the land, that I said, "Lord GOD, please pardon! How can Jacob stand, For he is small?" 3 The LORD changed His mind about this. "It shall not be," said the LORD. Amos 7:4-6 Thus the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, the Lord GOD was calling to contend with them by fire, and it consumed the great deep and began to consume the farm land. 5 Then I said, "Lord GOD, please stop! How can Jacob stand, for he is small?" 6 The LORD changed His mind about this. "This too shall not be," said the Lord GOD.

  16. Bible Survey - Amos Romans 8:34 Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.

  17. Bible Survey - Amos The Restoration of the Kingdom Amos 9:13-14 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD, "When the plowman will overtake the reaper And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the mountains will drip sweet wine And all the hills will be dissolved. 14 Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit.”

  18. Bible Survey - Amos Place in the Canon: Historically, it continues the picture of Israel on its downward spiral into Assyrian exile in 722 BC. Theologically, it reminds us that our religion is useless if it consists only of empty traditions and rituals and doesn’t move us to change the way we live our lives. Devotionally, Amos motivates us to exercise our love of God through love and compassion for the poor.
