  1. Mr. Calise Honors Geometry Room 306 Unit A Section 1 Welcome Back! Hope you had a Great summer!

  2. Drill: Wed 8/27 Look at the picture at right. List as many geometric terms as you can that are represented in the photo. Objective: Identify, name, draw, and apply basic facts of points, lines, segments, rays, and planes.

  3. What is Geometry? Brain Pop Video Log In Info Name: baltcops Password: brainpop

  4. A bit that’s new, a bit of review… • Vocabulary 1) Point 2) Line 3) Segment 4) Collinear 5) Parallel Lines 6) Perpendicular Lines 7) Skew Lines 8) Plane 9) Coplanar 10) Ray 11) Opposite Rays 12) Parallel Planes

  5. Point

  6. Notes(Vocab) Points: have no size, often represented with dots, and named with a capital letter. C A B

  7. ine

  8. Lines: have no thickness, and extend infinitely in two directions. Named with two points, or a cursive letter. l Y X

  9. segmen

  10. Segments: Are parts of lines, they have two endpoints, and are named by using the two endpoints. B A

  11. col inea

  12. Collinear: points that are lying in the same line. • Non-Collinear: Not lying in the same line. A B C C A B

  13. el para

  14. Parallel Lines: are lines that are in the same plane and do not intersect. (Same Direction)

  15. per pend icular

  16. Perpendicular: • Perpendicular Lines Form Right Angles (90o)

  17. Skew Lines

  18. Skew Lines: Lines that are in different planes. (Different Directions and do not intersect)

  19. P LANE

  20. Planes: Extend infinitely in all directions. It is flat and has no thickness. There are two ways to name a plane. • To Name a plane you need 3non-collinear points. • You can also use a capital cursive letter.

  21. COP ANAR

  22. Coplanar: Points and lines that are in the same Plane.

  23. R A

  24. Rays: is a “half-line”. It has one endpoint and extends infinitely in one direction.

  25. Opposite R A S

  26. Opposite Rays: share the same endpoint and go in opposite directions.

  27. Parallel Planes

  28. Parallel Planes: Two planes that never intersect.

  29. Examples

  30. Examples

  31. Intro Questions • What are parallel lines? • True or False: Any two points are collinear. • True or False: Any three points are collinear. • Solve for x: 2x – 8 = x + 12

  32. A C B I D E H F G

  33. Wrap-Up • Homework: • Look through a magazine, newspaper, website, brochure, etc.. and cut out and label five examples of Unit A vocabulary words in the real world.
