NBA Lockout History • In 1995-1996 players and owners reached a deal before the start of the season • Before 1998, the NBA was the only sports league in the U.S. to never lose a game because of a work stoppage • Three-month labor dispute in 1995 • A brief work stoppage in 1996 • 1998–99 NBA lockout • 2011 NBA lockout

  3. Reasons For an NBA Lockout • Revenue sharing • Structure of the salary cap • Owners want to place limits on maximum player salaries • Owners wanted to modify the pay scale for rookie players

  4. 2011 NBA Lockout • Preseason games cancelled • The first 4 weeks of the 2011-2012 season through November 30, 2011 cancelled • Players have signed contracts to play in other countries • Lockout will remain in effect until NBPA reaches deal with owners • Began at 12:01 am on July 1, 2011 • Teams cannot trade • Teams cannot sign or contact players • Players cannot access NBA team facilities
