What have you learned about science and society through this way of working? • There is not one solution but many solutions in different ways. • We must compromise to accommodate for differences in opinion and be willing to listen. • Science is our medium in which we can have this type of discussion. • Science and society are connected in through this type of word. • Scientific literacy.

  3. Are there any disadvantages about work like this with science and society? • It is difficult to give a voice to everyone in the discussion. (teacher acts as facilitator in this) • A lot of time is needed for the teacher to plan the necessary materials and information for the lesson.

  4. Are there any advantages of work like this? • Develops skills such as communication, and problem solving. • They learn to listen to other opinions, be open-minded and see others perspectives. • It helps build self confidence in the children. • No special equipment needed for this method • Reflects democracy. • Lesson is more enjoyable.

  5. Can this way of working be used for younger or older students to teach them about science and society? • Yes • There are different aims for younger and older students. • Older students must give stronger opinions • Older students must do more independent research. • Younger students will have their emphasis on more social skills.

  6. Expected outcomes: • They will develop their social skills. • Learn about new concepts in interesting ways. • Gain new knowledge through research and listening to others.

  7. Basic Topics: • Interdisciplinary approach and integration through many subject such as: • Languages, drama, science, geography, history. • Methodology: constructivism – active learning.

  8. Activity: • Drama: process drama, e.g. The Circus • Science: learning and research new concepts. • Language: development of oral language. • History: other’s perspectives • Geography: human/social environments

  9. Teaching Materials: • Internet • Books • Applets • Role cards • Dress-up clothes (junior students)

  10. Teacher Competencies: • Teacher as facilitator. • Ability to lead a discussion. • Imaginative approach. • Can adopt to situations that arise and can improvise to ensure the lesson remains active.
