Mastering Long Division: A Simple Method for Success

Discover an easy way to conquer long division with the mnemonic D, M, S, C, and B—representing Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Check, and Bring Down. In this guide, we walk through the steps of dividing 7489 by 6, illustrating the process clearly. Learn how to remember the divisor's size, see how many times it fits into different parts of the dividend, and manage the subtraction and bringing down steps effectively. This comprehensive breakdown will help you understand and perform long division with confidence.

  1. How To Solve Long Division By Molly and Raghuveer

  2. DMSCB An easy way to remember the steps of long division is to remember the letters D , M, S, C, and B. They stand for divide, multiply, subtract, check, and bring down . The 6 is the divisor. You can remember that by seeing that the word divisor is smaller than the word dividend , and the 6 is smaller than the 7489.

  3. Getting The One We got the one because 6 can only go into 7 one time.

  4. Multiplying You multiply 6 times 1 and that gives you 6.

  5. Subtracting You subtract 7 minus 6 which gives you 1.

  6. Bringing Down You bring down the 4 which gives you 14.

  7. Let’s Divide! 6 can go into 14 two times.

  8. Multiplying Strikes Back! You multiply 6 times 2 which equals 12.

  9. Subtraction : Part 2 You subtract 14 minus 12 which equals 2.

  10. Bring Down You bring down the 8,which makes a total of 28.

  11. Division : Part 3 6 can go into 28 4 times.

  12. Multiplying 6 times 4 is 24.

  13. Subtracting Strikes Back! You subtract 28 minus 24 which equals 4.

  14. Bring Down You bring down the 9 which makes 49.

  15. Divide’s Last Stand 6 can go into 49 eight times.

  16. Multiplying 6 times 8 is 48

  17. Subtracting When you subtract 49 minus 48, it gives you 1.

  18. Putting the remainder There are no more numbers to bring down, so you put the 1 up as your remainder and that is your answer, or quotient.
