  1. How to Solve Equations By: Matthew Olsack

  2. How to solve a on-step equations to solve a one-step equation you have to do inverse operations. A inverse operation is the opposite operation. If an equation is addition, then to find the variable, a letter for an unknown number, you would do subtraction (it’s inverse operation). It is the same thing for multiplication and division. When you are doing equations you do the inverse operation of the total (sum, quotient, product, difference) and the number that you have in the problem, but you cross that out. Once you solve the problem, that is the missing variable. You can check your work by doing the problem with the variable with it Example: 4+n=10 4+6=10 - 4 - 4 n=6

  3. How to Solve a Two-step Equation Like a one-step equation, in a two step equation you also use inverse operation, but in a two-step equation you always start out with addition and subtraction. In a two-step equation you will always have addition or subtraction and multiplication or division. When you do your equation you start out as usual adding or subtraction from your total. Once you got your answer you then bring down your multiplication or division and do the same once you solve your problem check your work by doing the problem. Example:6+6x=30 6+6 x 4=30 - 6 - 6 6x 24 6 6 x = 4

  4. Now you Know Try it Out! • 5+x=20 • 1+n=-5 • 3-y=1 • 200x=3000 • 60 = 12 m

  5. Word Problems! • Ryan Howard struck out 172 times this year. He struck out 199 times in 2007. what is the total amount of times he struck out in 2007 and 2011 combined? Write an equation and solve. Check your work! • Jacoby Elsbury hit 32 homeruns 2011. he hit 8 homeruns in 2008. what is the difference in homeruns? Show your work and write an equation. Check your work! • Curtis Granderson scored 136 runs in 2011. Ian kinsler scored 121 runs in 2011. what are all of the runs scored by the two players this year? Write and solve an equation. Check your work!

  6. Now you Know Try it Out • 5x + 4=59 • n -4 = -2 2 3. 6y -5=31 4. n + 1= 6 10 5. 6x + 20= 56

  7. Word Problems! • Jimmy Rollins stole 30 bases this year. Geardo Parra stole half as many. Chase Utley stole 14. how many bases were stolen in all? Write and solve an equation. Check your work! • Eric Thames 95 hits this year. That is half of what Hunter Pence hit in the regular season. Hunter pence also had 4 hits in the postseason. How many hits did they have in total • Joey Votto had 103 RBIs this year. He had 3 less than Michael Young. Michael young has 2 times more RBIs than another guy. How much are in all? Solve and write an equation. Check your work!

  8. Answers for one-step equations • 5+15=20 x=15 • 1+-6=-5 n=-5 • 3-2=1 y=2 • 200X15=3000 x=15 • 60 =12 m=5 5

  9. One-step word problems • 199=x-172 x=271 • 32=m+8 m=24 • 136=s-121 s=257

  10. Two-step questions • 5X11+=59 x=11 • 4 – 4 =-2 n=4 2 • 6X6-5=31 y=6 • 50 +1=6 n=50 10 • 6x+=56 x=50

  11. Two-step word problems • X=59 • N=289 • W=162
