  1. CHAPTER 2, SECTIONS 4 AND 5 Air Quality and Environmental Issues

  2. Pollutants – harmful substances in air, water, or soil • Can affect human health http://www.tropical-rainforest-animals.com/image-files/airpollutants.jpg

  3. What are sources of air pollution? • Natural sources include forest fires, dust storms, and volcanoes • Human activities include farming, construction, and burning of fossil fuels http://www.epa.gov/apti/course422/images/fig-7.jpg

  4. Photochemical smog – a brownish haze that is formed when certain pollutants react with each other in sunlight • Acid rain – rain that contains more acid than normal • Both are caused by the burning of fossil fuels http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/@api/deki/files/6346/=la-smog.jpg

  5. What are the types of environmental issues? • Resource use, population growth, and pollution http://www.susps.org/images/worldpopgr.gif

  6. Natural resource – anything in the environment used by people • Renewable resource – a resource that is always available or is naturally replaced in a short time • Nonrenewable resource – a resource that is not replaced in a useful time frame http://cchs.usd224.com/Classes09/PlantsofWonder/Pictures/sweet%20corn.jpg http://cdn3.benzinga.com/files/coal-train330_11.jpg

  7. Pollution – the contamination of Earth’s land, water, or air • As the population grows, so does the demand for resources http://sleepapneadisorder.info/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/cars_pollution.jpg

  8. How are environmental decisions made? • Environmental science – the study of natural processes in the environment and how humans can affect them • To help balance the different opinions on an environmental issue, decision makers must weigh the costs and benefits of a proposal http://www.environmentpoint.com/wp-content/themes/lifestyle_20/images/turbine.jpg
