Background: “Seven Revolutions” cooperative project • AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) • AASCU partnered with New York Times in American Democracy Project to promote citizenship • CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) emphasizes global issues in Seven Revolutions project • Began in September, 2006

  3. AASCU (American Association of State Colleges and Universities) • 420 public member institutions • 3.7 million students (55% of all four-year students in the United States) • Eight member institutions originally interested in “Seven Revolutions” project (now ten institutions)

  4. New York Times • World wide news gathering organization • Increasingly developing audio and video resources, in addition to familiar print media • Worked with AASCU in American Democracy Project to provide print and Internet-based resources to enhance citizenship

  5. CSIS (Center for Strategic and International Studies) • Global non-partisan think tank centered in Washington, DC • Approximately 185 analysts examine key issues facing our world • Global Strategy Institute (GSI) attempts to synthesize information to identify key trends • Erik Peterson, former head of GSI, developed Seven Revolutions presentation, delivered to over 80,000 people in 48 states and 24 countries

Partner Summary • AASCU wants to enhance citizenship • New York Times has significant information about world issues; move to younger audience • CSIS has wealth of resources on global issues, including “Seven Revolutions,” and interested in expanding to education • Fertile ground for partnership, but could have been viewed as resources in search of a clarified purpose and organization

Developed Planning Assumptions • Goal--educate globally competent citizens • Objectives--develop identified knowledge, skills, and attitudes • Setting--introductory and capstone courses, infusion across curriculum in AASCU schools • Learners across spectrum, but often limited knowledge and skills and narrow worldview

Decided to develop a “Toolkit” • Use “Seven Revolutions” as an organizing framework and integrate CSIS content • Integrate New York Times content • Identify other Internet-based content • Include teaching and learning resources that faculty and students could use • Integrate all resources in an accessible, comprehensive Internet-based web site
