  1. Reading In Social Studies SQV2RS Getting The Most Out Of Reading Your Textbook

  2. Barriers To Success In Social Studies • There is no formula to figure out social studies for example a+b+c= the Cuban missile crisis. • Students are not reading on grade level • Students don’t get what they’re reading • Student do not know how to read their textbook effectively

  3. What Is SQV2RS? • A way for students to engage their text book as a more effective Reader • Improves Comprehension • Increases Retention of Material • Get students thinking about their text on a higher cognitive level

  4. Steps In the Process • S= Survey • Q= Question • V= Vocabulary • R= Read • R=Recite • S= Summarize

  5. Survey • Students write down the bold captions in the section of their assigned reading • You can also have them identify sub headings as well. • This gives the student an overview of the section and helps focus their reading. • Most students usually skim through the book to find answers to questions and have not cognitively engaged the material.

  6. Questioning • Students Take the bold captions in the section and began to develop questions about the reading. • They began to develop interrogatory hypothesis. • First began as small teacher facilitated groups. • But to have students complete the process of questioning on their own is the target.

  7. Vocabulary • Next have students write down any words in bold throughout the entire section. • These are usually identified as key words in the text. • Have them write down any words they are not familiar with and write them on the board and give them a quick definition (optional). • Usually this will be your lower readers.

  8. Read • The next step is Reading the text. • This should be done in SSR with the facilitator actively monitoring the class. • As students read the text their going to answer their self generated questions. • If their questions can not be answered from the text, have them rewrite their question so that it can.

  9. Students will also define their bold key terms from reading based upon context clues. • Do not allow students to use the glossary to define terms.

  10. Recite • After reading and answering their questions you can have students….. • Pair share • Review their questions covering up their answers and recall the information from memory. • Peer quiz • The Sky is the limit.

  11. Summarize • After students have completed the proceeding steps have them summarize the reading. • Summaries should be in their own words • No more than two paragraphs • No less than one • Include key concepts and content based
