How do you find the ends of the threads on each cocoon in order to start unwrapping each cocoon? We watched and it seems that the answer is quite simple. The place a large number of cocoons in a pot of hot water (see below) and then stir the cocoons, gently with a wooden stick. The silk ends float off each cocoon and stick to the wooden stick.
The lady then takes a group of loose ends off the stick and draws them through a small small hole in a stick (below left) and then draws the group of fibers around a wheel (that removes excess water) and then either lays the new silk thread on a straw mat for drying or rolls the thread around a larger wheel for drying. movie showing how to unwinding threads
