Main Argument • I will argue that politically conservative ideologies in the 2012 Republican Primaries and the Virginia Adoption Bill rely on the concepts of “time claims” (Kath Weston Gender in Real Time) and the “invented tradition” (Eric Hobsbawm The Invented Tradition) to reify the heteronormative notion of the “Traditional American Family” as a pre-existing familial structure now endangered by the rising gay and lesbian families within U.S. society.
