Interview • Post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) (Level 5 and 6 NFQ) • To develop vocational and technological skills in order to get a job or to go into further education and training. • school-leavers and adults • PLC courses take place in schools, colleges and community education centres. • Full time courses; 1 to 2 years. • They offer a mixture of practical work, academic work and work experience. • Over 90% of PLC courses are delivered by VECs (vocational education committees). • A wide range of disciplines are covered including business, electronics engineering, computing, catering, sport and leisure, theatre and stage, performance art, art craft and design, equestrian studies, multi-media studies, journalism, tourism, marketing, childcare and community care, hairdressing and beauty care, applied science, horticulture etc. • Qualifax for Application information

  6. Notes • Learners working towards FETAC Awards may apply for places in Higher Education courses through CAO, as Leaving Certificate students do. Links Scheme / Pilot Scheme – Apply to CAO • Some courses have links that allow students to apply directly to enter the 2nd /3rd year of a university/IoT course.

  8. Equity of Access to Higher Education • Entry to colleges and universities has been dominated by school leavers who have completed the Leaving Cert. (CAO) • Many colleges and universities have made significant strides in providing programmes aimed at achieving equity of access for learners of all backgrounds, identities and abilities. • This will make sure that our colleges and universities remain diverse, vibrant places in which to study and become more representative of the society which they serve.

  9. Widening participation in 3rd level Other Admission Routes 1. Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) A college/university admissions scheme which offers places on reduced points and extra college support to school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. 2. Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) The Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is a college and university admissions scheme which offers places on a reduced points basis to school leavers with disabilities. 3.   10. Mature Students • Universities and colleges actively encourage applications from mature candidates. Mature students are those aged 23 years or older on 1 January in the year of entry. • Mature students have a wealth of knowledge and experience with which they make a valuable contribution to college life and to society. Many colleges and universities embrace the ethos of lifelong learning and are committed to the objective of widening participation. In order to increase participation of adult learners they continually work towards wider entry routes for mature students.
