  1. FrontPage: Grab a computer and log on. Homework: OL 8.4 due Friday

  2. Chapter 10, Section 1 (continued…) Independent Agencies of the Federal Government

  3. Independent Agencies (IAs) of the Federal Government • Not part of the Cabinet departments • But perform functions in the same way that agencies/bureaus/departments in the cabinet do • Why are they independent of a cabinet department? • Cover areas of government that don’t fall neatly under a cabinet “area” • NASA • Need to be independent and report directly to President for other reasons • CIA

  4. 3 types of Independent Agencies • Regulatory Commissions • Purpose is to write rules and police areas of the economy and industry • Government corporations • Just like a private business; goal is to provide a service for a profit • Independent Executive Agencies • For lack of a better term…just like cabinet agencies, bureaus, etc. • Just don’t fall under a cabinet department, or need to remain independent in order to do their jobs effectively.

  5. Need to know… • What is the purpose of each type of IA? • What is the leadership situation in each of these types of IAs? • How many people at the top? • How do they get there (appointed, elected, etc.)? • How long do they serve? • What are some examples of these IAs?
