  2. Hero or Villain? Franklin Delano Roosevelt is an American HERO!

Biography… • Born January 30, 1882 in New York • Died April 12, 1945 • Grew up wealthy • Went to school at Harvard University • Fell in love with Theodore Roosevelt’s niece, Eleanor. • Motivated by his 5th cousin, Teddy Roosevelt. • He was the only president to be elected to office 4 times. (1933-1945) • He led America through 2 of the worst dilemmas in our nation, the Great Depression and WWII.

Personal Characteristics… • He was influential. • During his 4 terms as President, FDR managed to expand the powers of the federal government while pulling America out of its greatest depression. • He was determined. • His legs were paralyzed from polio but he didn’t let that stop him. He still ran and won the Presidency. • He was reliable. • FDR promised he would get America out of the Great Depression and he did with the new deal.

  5. Why FDR is a hero! • Franklin Delano Roosevelt can easily be considered one of America’s greatest heroes. He pulled our country out of difficult times, the Great Depression and World War II. His plan, the New Deal, put several social and economic programs into play that helped get America out of the Great Depression. • Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) • During WWII, Roosevelt joined the Allied Powers and kept the nation’s economy and spirit alive till American and the Allied Powers were successful.

  6. Impact on World History… • Roosevelt had a huge impact on not only American history, but world history. He transformed America into the superpower it is today. If Roosevelt had never become president, there is no telling how long the Great Depression would have lasted and what lasting effects it would have had on the economy. He turned America into a role model, a country that could face adversity but still end up on top. He also was a core member of the trio that started the United Nations, a peacekeeping body that is still in effect today.
