  3. What is the Preamble?

  4. So what does that mean???? • Establish Justice: To make sure all citizens have their rights and are treated equally and fairly. • Insure Domestic Tranquility: To make sure the people are safe in their own private property. • Provide For The Common Defense: To help keep the country safe by hiring police, militiamen, firefighters, etc. • Promote The General Welfare: To give what's needed to those in need, such as food stamps, charity donations, and soup kitchens. • Secure The Blessings Of Liberty To Ourselves And Our Posterity: To make sure that we as citizens have the right to freedom and liberty, along with our future generations. • Do Ordain And Establish This Constitution For The United States Of America: We declare this to be what the Constitution will achieve for the United States

  5. What is an Amendment? • Amendment- is a change to the Constitution • There are currently 27 Amendments • The first ten Amendments are called the “Bill of Rights”

  6. The Bill of Rights • The Bill of Rights are the first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution. • The idea behind the Bill of Rights was to insure certain freedoms and rights to the citizens of America. It put limits on what the government could do and control. • Freedoms protected include freedom of religion, speech, assembly, the right to bear arms, unreasonable search and seizure of your home, the right to a speedy trial, and more.

  7. The 14th Amendment • The 14th Amendment is the longest amendment • It says that anyone born in the United States is a citizen and has the rights of a citizen. • This was important because it ensured that the freed slaves were officially U.S. citizens and were awarded the rights given to U.S. citizens • The amendment also guarantees "equal protection of the laws." It was put there to make sure that every person (regardless of age, race, religion, etc.) would be treated the same by the government.
