  2. From 1300 through the 1600s, the Ottoman Empire (centered around Turkey) was the most powerful empire in Southwest Asia and North Africa Suleyman the Lawgiver

  3. The Ottoman Turks were Muslims and spread the Islam religion among the territories they conquered Janissaries and the “gunpowder” empire

  4. From 1700s to 1922, the Ottoman Empire grew weaker due to poor leadership By the outbreak of World War I, the Ottoman Empire was so weak and had lost so much of its territory it was nicknamed the “Sick Man of Europe”

  6. When the Central Powers lost World War I in 1919, the Ottoman Empire broke apart and was forced to give up all territories; it was reduced to its home country only, Turkey

  7. In 1922, Nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal overthrew the last Ottoman sultan and created the Republic of Turkey

  8. Kemal was elected Turkey’s first president in 1923 and became known as “Ataturk” (Father of the Turks) As President, Kemal transformed Turkey into a modern nation Kemal separated the laws of Islam from the laws of the nation and introduced a European-style legal code He granted womenthe right to vote and the right to run for public office He encouraged industry and a capitalist economy

  9. Today, Turkey is a wealthy nation with a secular (non-religious) democracy that protects many personal freedoms among a largely Islamic population

  10. When WWI ended, the Middle East was divided into mandates that were controlled by Britain and France

  11. Britain and France offered self-rule to Arabs in the mandates...

  12. …but the European powers held real control over the region’s oil fields Increasing demand for oil in the 1920s and 1930s brought European and American oil companies which dominated the local governments of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia The domination of the Middle East by Western powers and the success of Kemal in Turkey increased Arab nationalism and calls for independence

  14. The end of WWII in 1945 inspired a new wave of Arab nationalism as Syria, Lebanon and Jordan became nations By the 1970s, all of the territories in the Middle East were independent of European control

  15. In 1960, the oil-producing nations of the world formed the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to regulate the supply and price of oil OPEC gave Middle Eastern nations greater control over the oil in the region

The creation of Israel changed the history of the Middle East After WWII, the United Nations divided the British mandate Palestine into two nations: a Palestinian state and a Jewish state called Israel This region was once the home of the Jews about 2000 years before, but they had been spread around the world by the Roman Empire Now, in 1947, the Jews began returning, with part of Palestine being given to the Jewish people This upset the Palestinians (who are Muslim) as well as Muslims in neighboring Arab countries

  17. When Israel declares itself an independent nation in 1948, they are the lone Jewish state among the Muslim Middle East The first Arab-Israeli War began when Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Syria invaded Israel to help the Palestinians

  18. FIRST ARAB-ISRAELI WAR Israel defended itself, holding off the forces of all six Muslim nations Israel also seized additional territories along the West Bank and the border with Egypt

  19. Fighting broke out again in 1967; Israel quickly defeated Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Iran After this Six Day War, Israel gained control of Jerusalem, the Golan Heights, West Bank, and Sinai Peninsula Israel saw these territories as a buffer zone from future attacks

  20. In 1973, the Arabs attacked again, but Israel, under the leadership of Prime Minister Golda Meir, once again successfully defended itself

  21. In 1977, a major breakthrough took place when Egypt agreed to recognize Israel’s right to exist in exchange for a return of the Sinai Peninsula by Israel

  22. As Israel and Arab nations fought, the Palestinians struggled for recognition

  23. Palestinian Muslims were granted a partitioned territory by the United Nations, but Israel seized some of those areas in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank

  24. In 1964, the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was formed; its goal was to demand a Palestinian state Since its formation, the PLO has carried out numerous attacks on Israel and receives aid from many Muslim nations in the Middle East

  25. Israeli-Palestinian tensions have intensified in recent years due to suicide bombings in Jewish civilian territories

  26. The Israelis have responded with many bloody reprisals, leading to much civilian death on both sides

  27. Peace talks have stalled as Israel refuses to negotiate until Palestinian attacks stop Recently, both side have discussed creating a new Palestinian state that would exist peacefully next to Israel

  29. One important trend of the past 50 years has been the increase in international terrorism Terrorism is when people or groups use violence and fear to bring change to a government or society Terrorism is not new; since the 1960s, more than 14,000 attacks have occurred worldwide

  36. Al-Qaeda at first was made up of Afghan rebels and other Muslims from the Middle East who fought the Soviet Union in the 1980s; they were trained and armed by the CIA

  37. When the United States intervened in the conflict between Iraq and Kuwait in 1991 (the first Persian Gulf War), bin Laden saw the American presence in the Middle East as an affront to Islam

  38. Al-Qaeda sees the presence of American military and Western businesses in the Middle East (especially Saudi Arabia) as an offense against Islam

  39. Arabia is where the Prophet Muhammad started Islam; Westerners “profane” this “holy place” with their “decadent” ways

  40. Al-Qaeda has the goals of destroying Israel, removing all Western influence from the Middle East, and spreading strict Islamic ideology throughout the world; they view their attacks as a jihad (“holy war”) against the “non-believers”

  41. In 1993, al-Qaeda detonated a bomb in the basement of the World Trade Center in New York City
