History: • Principles of the Confucianism were established at the beginning of the Zhou dynasty (1122-221 B.C.) • Confucianism and Taoism came about during the “Age of Philosophers” from the sixth century to the third century B.C. • Confucius continued his teachings until he died in 479 B.C. His work was not recognized until after his death.

  3. Major Beliefs and Teachings: Beliefs- Teachings - • Righteousness in heart = beauty in character • Beauty in character = harmony in home • Harmony in home = order in nation • Order in nation = peace in world • They learn from the book of six classics, which contains poetry, songs, history, changes, annals, and rites • Their supreme beings are Confucius and Shang-Ti • Their sacred writings are the NuChing and SsuShu

  4. Historical Leaders: Yang Chu Mo Tzu Mencius To be good meant to compassionate. • Each individual should perfect himself spiritually and physically rather than himself to supposed good of community. • Emphasized unity of mankind and universal love.

  5. Where in the world: Historically- Currently- • Confucianism originated in China • Founded in 6th – 5th century B.C • Confucianism has spread to Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam

Symbols: The water symbol- • This symbol is often used as an ideogram for Confucianism, however there is no official symbol for Confucianism • It represents the source of life in Chinese philosophy • This symbol is also used to represent Confucianism, most often seen in Chinese wedding ceremonies • It means total harmony, and righteousness in your own life and relationships with others
