History Confucius was born in 551 BCE in Lu, during the Chou dynasty. Father died when 3 years of age, raised only by mother. Mother died when he 23 and gave him a sense of moral reform. In hopes of informing his countrymen of his newly found morals he went state to state. He went knowing that some states will well receive him and others will reject him. Confucius was also jailed and almost starved to death during his years of wandering. He lived his last few years in poverty and died 479 B.C. at 70 years of age.
History cont. Confucianism is studied among the followers of Confucius. Decedents of the people who listened to Confucius and his teachings on morals are the ones who study it today.
Beliefs • Focuses on secular ethics and morality • It is tied up with moral, social, political, philosophical, and religious thought. • have their own precepts on what it deems important towards society and spiritual growth as a person. • Confucianism does not lay too much emphasis on death.
Beliefs cont. • Although Confucianism deals solely with life here on earth rather than the afterlife, it does take into consideration mankind's ultimate concerns. • Deceased ancestors were thought to exercise power over the living. • sacrifice to heaven was a common occurrence. • and the practice of augury.
Stereotypes • All people who study Confucianism are nonviolent and not confrontational. • Bunch of hippies because they believe in peace in harmony. • Not a true religion because it is not a belief between god and yourself just amongst your fellow man.
