  2. Read pages 1-10 independently. Then see if you can determine: • Setting • Where and when does this take place? • What kinds of interesting or unusual customs are part of this culture? • Conflict • What are some central problems the protagonist might have to face? • Characters • Who has come into play so far? • What do we know about them?

Setting: dystopian future • Houses are fireproof • Firemen burn books • Notion of firemen stopping fires is absurd • Uncle arrested for driving 40mph • Uncle arrested for being a pedestrian • Dystopia: a terrible, futuristic world where the population is terribly controlled by a force determined to limit freedom and knowledge

Character: Montag • Fireman • Loves his job of lighting things on fire • Enjoys watching things burn • Has been a fireman for 10 years (since he was 20) • Scoffs at the old fashioned idea of fire fighters putting out fires • Doesn't appreciate being shown up by a young girl • Loves the smell of kerosene • Lives next door to Clarisse

  7. Character: Clarisse • Seventeen and "insane" • Notices things • Questions things • Asks Montag if he is happy • Isn't afraid of Montag, even though she should be • Knows he's a fireman by smell • Comes from a rebellious family

  10. Character: Mildred • Montag's Wife • Attempted suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills • Listens to music through headphones • Deeply unhappy • Shallow • Obsessed with watching TV

  11. Characters: The Hound • Mechanical spidery creature with a long needle • Catches victims and injects morphine • Firemen like to watch it kill things for fun • Possibly programmed to kill Montag

  12. Character: Beatty • Has a ruthless quality • Has known the “dark side” of reading books • Knows his history and how/why things are what they are • By his own rules, he is a criminal; perhaps that is why he is letting Montag go • Obsessed with fire, always playing with lighter • Fire chief

Character: Faber • Met Montag in the park (while reading) and was terrified that Montag would turn him in • Knew Montag would either turn him in or turn to his side • Professor of English (literature) • A self-declared coward; his first inclination is NOT to help Montag • Knows that he should have done more to stand up for books but is/was too afraid • Agrees to help Montag only after Montag starts to tear apart the Bible • Agrees to use old contacts to help re-circulate books • Shares a special microphone so he and Montag can communicate
