  2. How a poor blacksmith evolved into an American icon. John Deere was a blacksmith and the finder of Deere and Company. Deere and Company is one of the largest and leading agricultural and construction equipment in the world. He invented the first commercially successful steel plow in 1837.

  3. Early Life • John Deere was born February 7, 1804 • He got married in 1827. • He was the father of 9 children

  4. Early Life • After John Deere had kids he went bankrupt. • He sold his shop to his father in law and left to Illinois. • He settled in Grand Detour Illinois. • There were no blacksmiths in the area so it wasn’t hard to find a job.

  5. Steel Plow • Deere sold his first plow in 1837. • Deere was selling 75 to 100 plows per year. • Deere had to partner up with someone to keep up on making plows. • By 1885 Deere sold more than 10,000 plows.

  7. Later Life • Deere was the President of the National Bank of Moline. • He was the director of the Moline Free Public Library.

  8. Later Life cont. • Deere was the second mayor of Moline. • He was a mayor for two years. • He put steel lights in the cities and towns. • He got sewage for the city.

  9. Later Life cont. • He got new sidewalks and repaired sidewalks in the town. • He bought 83 acres of land for a new city park.

  10. Later Life cont. • Deere could not be mayor for a second term due to chest pains. • He died at home on May 17, 1886. • Deere was 82 when he died.
