  1. Dislocation Dynamics Simulations Practical Training Report Rajlakshmi Purkayastha Roll No : 04011013

  2. Outline • Where : Royal University of Groningen • Who : Prof E Van der Giessen • What : Multiple Indenters and Source Strength Distribution • How : Great !

  3. Where: University of Groningen The University of Groningen is situated in Groningen, The Netherlands. One of the oldest universities in Europe, having been established in 1100 AD it is the biggest University serving north Holland. The Department of Applied Physics houses some of the most cutting edge work in Thin films and characterisation. And even though RuG is not a technical university, it houses a small group of enginners in this very building..

  4. Who : Micromechanics Group My work was with Professor Erik Van der Giessen of the Micromechanics Group of the University of Groningen, and Professor Lucia Nicola of Delft University. Their Mission statement reads , “The mission of this research group is to develop new models and computational tools for the micromechanics of materials, and to employ these to develop relationships between the internal structure of a material and its mechanical properties. We study material properties at a range of length scales, placing special emphasis on scale transitions.”

  5. What : Multiple indentation and Source Strength Distribution The goal : To run multiple randomly placed indenters for any user defined width From single... ....to multiple indenters The Dislocation Dynamic framework analysed the effect of a bulk substrate of width 50 microns with sources distributed in it having the strengths distributed as per a Gaussian Distribution. I wanted to experiment with this distribution as well to see the effects of a non-uniform strength distribution.

  6. What : • It involved changing the type of mesh used in the Finite Element Mesh along with all the basic framework

  7. What : Some Results

  8. What : Some results

  9. How : The experience • The Research experience in itself was really insightful • Exposure to world class computing facilities and pioneers in the field • Learnt about the other practical difficulties of reasearch such as logistics etc. • Learnt about a new Country and a new Culture, staying away from home is a very learning experience!

  10. Thank You !
