  2. What are Microbes Microbes - Living things too small for the human eye to see without a microscope. Most microbes are harmless. Others can cause infectious diseases, these are known as Pathogens. Two types of microbes are bacteria and Viruses.

  3. Bacterial Infections Tetanus- often produces a poison that causes uncontrollable muscle contractions. Tuberculosis- a bacterial infection of the lungs. Lyme Disease- passed to people by ticks that live on wild deer. May cause flu like symptoms.

  4. Viruses Much smaller than bacteria. Invade living cells to reproduce more of the virus. Examples: Influenza: highly contagious respiratory infection caused by any variety of viruses. Shingles: Painful skin condition caused by reemergence of the chicken pox virus later in life. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Unexplained repeated bouts of extreme fatigue that rest does not cure and that last at least six months. Caused by a virus.

  5. Other Pathogens Fungi: yeast and molds. Cause variety of illness from athletes foot to incurable lung infections. Protozoa: Single-celled creatures that cause diarrhea and other ills. (examples: pinworms and head lice)

  6. Public Defense Against Disease Chlorinate public water supplies. Immunization of household pets. (rabies) Immunization of Vaccines, which is a drug made from the pathogen or poison it produces, which trains the bodies immune system to fight the pathogen.

  7. Bodies Defense Against Disease Skin: Produces salty, acidic sweat (which pathogens don’t like). Also it has one-way pores. Membranes: Line the body chambers (internal) Immune System: Bodies 2nd line of defense to fight off disease.
